Please join California Chapter 1, American Academy of Pediatrics for its 6th Annual Pediatric Puzzles Interactive CME Conference! This year's topics include Pediatric Dermatolory in Skin of Color, Advocacy and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Pediatrics, Psychopharmacology, Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Gender Questions in Primary Care, and Lipids Screening and Nutrition. As always, all the talks will be in audience-response format.
MEET OUR SPEAKERS
Nusheen Ameenuddin, MD, MPH, FAAP Everyday Advocacy for Pediatricians and Practical Ways to Enhance Equity, Diversity & Inclusion in Pediatrics
Dr. Nusheen Ameenuddin is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Community Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. She serves as Chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Communications and Media. She is also Chair of Diversity and Inclusion of the Mayo Clinic Health System.
She is most passionate about advocating for underserved populations and immigrant populations who face barriers to healthcare. Dr. Ameenuddin has participated in vaccine education outreach with the Minnesota Department of Health, partnering with leaders in the Somali community and visiting mosques.
Dr. Ameenuddin also has a strong interest in health equity and the effects of media on children. She is an active #tweetiatrician on social media who helped spearhead the video campaign as part of the AAP’s #KeepKidsCovered initiative. She also testified before the US House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce about children’s media used during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Ameenuddin received her MD and MPH degree from the University of Kansas Medical Center. She completed a pediatrics residency at Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education. She was selected as a Commonwealth Fund Fellow in Minority Health Policy at Harvard Medical School where she also completed a Master of Public Administration degree at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
Taron Davis, MD Pediatric PM&R (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation) for the PCP
Dr. Taron Davis is a pediatric physiatrist, a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation for infants, children and adolescents with disabling conditions. He cares for young people with amputations or limb deficiencies, and for those who have issues with physical function resulting from brain or spinal cord injuries, rheumatic disorders, cancer, neurological conditions or musculoskeletal conditions.
Davis earned his medical degree at St. Louis University School of Medicine. He completed a combined residency in pediatrics and physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
Dr. Davis is a member of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

I have worked as a child and adolescent psychiatrist for the past twenty years. First at a community mental health clinic in the South Bay and then at a children’s hospital in the East Bay. I have recently joined Kaiser Permanente to continue to provide mental health treatment to children, teens, young adults and their families.
I have been very interested in an integrated model of health care – focusing on treating the entire person – both physical and mental health. Child psychiatry provides the perfect blend of both – combining both therapy techniques and psychopharmacologic interventions. I have been trained in a collaborative model of treatment, where partnering with children and families is essential to successful treatment.
I have taught many clinicians over the years and the basic, overarching message I have shared with them is this: the recipe for healing is connection.
David Inwards-Breland, MD, MPH

Dr. David Inwards-Breland is Division Chief of the Adolescent Medicine Division at Rady Children’s Hospital; Co-Director of the Center for Gender Affirming Care and clinical professor of Pediatrics at UC San Diego School of Medicine.
Dr. David Inwards-Breland is from southern California and attended UC San Diego for undergraduate, majoring in Biology. He then attended the UC Berkeley School of Public Health and received his Master of Public Health. He went on to receive his MD from UC Davis School of Medicine. Dr. Inwards-Breland did his pediatric residency at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, California.
After 6 years of working as a general pediatrician, he then decided to enter into a fellowship at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco in Adolescent Medicine.
Dr. Inwards-Breland’s research interests include adolescent male health, depression,
Transgender/ Non-binary youth. He now sits on the American Board of Pediatrics, Sub-board on Adolescent Medicine.
Jennifer Sorrell, MD

Jennifer Sorrell, MD is a triple board-certified dermatologist who enjoys treating all members of the family. Dr. Sorrell went to the University of Maryland College Park for her bachelors degree and then went to Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA for her medical degree. She then completed her pediatrics residency at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL during which she discovered her interest in dermatology. She spent two years doing a clinical research fellowship and then completed her dermatology residency also at Northwestern. After residency, she completed a pediatric dermatology fellowship at Columbia University in New York. She initially worked in academia at Stanford University’s Department of Dermatology and now works in a private practice in San Francisco and San Mateo. Dr Sorrell has a special interest in acne and ethnic skin care needs.
June Tester, MD, MPH
Lipidemia - Inspiring your Patients to Make a Change

Dr. Tester is an Associate Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics at UCSF. She did her undergraduate training at Harvard University, medical school at UCSF, and master’s in public health at UC Berkeley. After pediatrics residency at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, she was a Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholar at UC Berkeley and UCSF.
Dr. Tester has a clinical focus on pediatric obesity, and is certified with the American Board of Obesity Medicine as well as the American Board of Clinical Lipidology. At UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, she sees patients in Prediabetes Clinic and Lipid Clinic. Her current research focuses on food interventions in vulnerable populations, with a special interest in food insecurity, and she is a co-PI of a clinical trial (ADELANTE) recently funded by the NIH which will be an intervention with Latinos with type 2 diabetes in La Clinica de la Raza.
