SAME Hampton Roads - Hold Paramount: The Engineer’s Responsibility to the Public in a Changing Env

Presenter: Betsy Ennis Dulin, Esq., P.E., R.P.A., Assistant General Counsel, Defense Commissary Agency, HQ

Course Title:

Hold Paramount: The Engineer’s Responsibility to the Public in a Changing Environment

Course Description:

State registration board rules, model rules, and engineering society rules of professional conduct for engineers address the engineer’s responsibilities to the public, to clients, to employers, and to peers. These rules share a common focus on the engineer’s primary obligation to protect the public welfare and safety. How is this obligation interpreted in an era of innovation, evolving project objectives and contexts, and aging infrastructure? This presentation will focus on the engineer’s responsibilities to the public in the context of current developments in engineering design, construction, and sustainment, and provide a foundation for analyzing common ethical issues.

Learning Objectives:

Attending the presentation will provide attendees with:

1. An awareness of primary rules of professional conduct that are common to state regulations, model rules, and professional societies.

2. An understanding of the engineer’s unique responsibility to the public safety and welfare, in the context of current projects and situations.

3. An enhanced perception of the interrelationship between rules of professional conduct and liability issues.

4. A foundation for analyzing unique and new professional responsibility issues.
