10/26/21 What You Need to Know: Comprehensive Education to Enhance Treatment of LGBTQIA+ Communities

Dr. Frederick Dombrowski

Course Description:
While the needs of LGBTQIA+ individuals are obtaining more national attention, clinical treatment practices and professionals are often lacking enhanced knowledge to assist these populations. The lack of education on behalf of the clinician coupled with unclear practice policies and non-affirming treatment makes it more likely that individuals from the LGBTQIA+ community will not follow up with treatment as needed. This seminar is designed to give participants the basic education and knowledge of the individualized LGBTQIA+ communities and their unique treatment needs. The presentation will also discuss ways that healthcare providers and their practices can create an affirming presence while advocating for adjustments in policies to create and inclusive environment.

Learning Objectives:
1. Identify personal internal reactions on the part of the medical provider toward members of the LGBTQIA+ communities to manage countertransference during treatment.
2. Identify 2-3 specific needs of LGBTQIA+ community members in relation to medical care, assessment and treatment.
3. Identify 2-3 ways to create an affirming and validating environment for members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
4. Review and discuss 3-4 basic clinical tools to explore the needs of LGBTQIA+ community members.
5. Idenitify 2-3 ways to respond to incidents of invalidation to LGBTQIA+ communities from staff or other patients.
