In this 2-part training presented by the Stony Brook Center for Excellence for Alzheimer's Disease, an overview of dementia will be covered, with a focus on Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of the disorder. Normal changes that occur with aging will be discussed, as well as how they are distinguished from the early symptoms associated with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Brain anatomy, chemistry, symptoms of various dementia, diagnosis and treatment will be explored.

Part I: August 24: Overview of Aging, Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease (Presented by Dr. Christodoulou)

Part II: August 31: Overview of Neurocognitive Disorders (Presented by Dr. Absar)

Who Should Attend: 

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to provide an overview of Alzheimer's disease.
  • Participants will be able to distinguish age-related cognitive changes from dementia.
  • Participants will be able to utilize screening measures for cognition and activities of daily living.
  • Participants will be able to learn basic neuroscience of the brain, including brain chemistry. 
  • Participants will be able to learn symptoms/signs of various diseases that cause dementia.
  • Participants will be able to learn diagnosis and treatment of various dementia including cognitive health (nutrition/brain exercise) and how to slow progression.

About the Presenters

Christopher Christodoulou, PhD is a Research Assistant Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Health, and Neurology in the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. He serves as a neuropsychologist in the Stony Brook Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s disease (CEAD) where he provides neurocognitive evaluations to help guide diagnosis and treatment planning for individuals with dementia and their families. His research spans a variety of clinical populations, with a focus on the relation of cognition to neuroimaging, the treatment of cognitive impairment with pharmacological compounds, and the interaction of cognition with affect and personality/temperament. He is currently collaborating on neuroimaging studies examining the role of neurotransmitters and inflammation in mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Dr. Christodoulou received his BA in psychology and his MA in community-clinical psychology from the University of Maryland. He earned his PhD in psychology specializing in neurocognition from the City University of New York. Dr. Christodoulou also completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Neuropsychology at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School and the Neuropsychology & Neuroscience Laboratory of the Kessler Foundation. 

Nicole Absar, MD has joined the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health as Clinical Assistant Professor. She is a diplomate in Behavioral Neurology & Neuropsychiatry and board certified in American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology. Dr. Absar completed her residency in psychiatry at Tufts University Medical School where she served as Chief Resident. She then went on to complete her certification in Behavioral Neurology & Neuropsychiatry from the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties. She is a Diplomate in Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry and a Fellow at the American Psychiatric Association. She has a passion for integrated neuroscience interfacing neurology, psychiatry and neurocognitive stimulation in dementia care. She is a registered yoga teacher and specializes in yoga as a therapy for brain disorders and neuropsychiatric illness.
