Morning Session (9:15 A.M. - 11:15 A.M.): Stepping Up for Racial Justice
The call for racial equity is causing many of us to reconsider everything we thought to be true, including the role of private philanthropy in society. According to Edgar Villanueva, author of Decolonizing Wealth, philanthropy often reinforces systems of power and oppression. From funding priorities to Board membership, philanthropic organizations make choices that can either help or harm the communities they serve. In this session, participants will explore diversity, equity, and inclusion as it relates to philanthropy; learn practices that can be adopted by their organizations; and leave with a personalized action plan.
Afternoon Session (1:15 P.M. - 2:15 P.M.): Breaking the Mold: Women’s Leadership in Fundraising
Are you leadership material? The answer depends in large part on your identities. Traditional mind models about leaders and leadership skew towards masculinity and other privileged identities, resulting in barriers that hold women back. In this workshop, participants will explore the unconscious biases we have about leaders and re-conceptualize leadership so that it works for, not against, people whose identities do not fit the traditional leadership mold. The workshop includes hands-on skill development for current and future women leaders as well as male allies.
About Alexis:
Alexis Kanda-Olmstead serves as the Director of Advancement Talent Management at Dartmouth College where she helps people maximize their potential to achieve organizational priorities. Her responsibilities include shaping the overarching strategy for talent management, coaching leaders and supervisors, and designing training and professional development programs for more than 250 staff.
During her 20+ years of experience in higher education, Alexis has delivered educational experiences to hundreds of staff and students, led award-winning diversity and inclusion initiatives, and started two talent management departments. She is the founder of the Amplify Women and Gender Initiative, a professional development program for women in Advancement, and AKO Collective, a women's leadership development company that offers training to women and girls. Alexis presents internationally on topics of inclusion and equity, including as a TEDx Speaker.
Alexis holds a bachelor's degree in organizational studies from the University of Michigan, a master's degree in college student personnel from Bowling Green State University, and a certificate in organization development from Colorado State University. She is a certified StrengthsQuest Educator and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Practitioner.
Alexis is the recipient of the CASE D1 Gold and Silver awards for the Amplify Women and Gender Initiative and a CASE Circle of Excellence Bronze award for Diversity Programs. She is also the only person to receive the Margaret B. Hazaleus award twice for her work supporting women students and staff from the Center for Women’s Studies and Gender Research at Colorado State University.
