Learning From Our Best Teachers: Individuals with Disabilities Explore Independence at Home and Work

Join Chuck Goodwin for this series focused on individualized long term supports. There are guest presenters, supplemental field activities and opportunities to interact with the instructor!  Employment, residential and community inclusion providers are encouraged to attend, which is free for everyone to attend!

On My Wheels: Perspectives from Someone Who’s Given and Received Disability Services
Jeff Grace has worked for the WA Developmental Disabilities Administration for many years and has provided support services for individuals with developmental disabilities. He has the unique perspective of also receiving disability services as he experiences Cerebral Palsy. Jeff will use his life experiences to help us develop better empathy for the individuals we support and offer insight into how to provide better support services both residentially and vocationally.

Learning objectives:
1. Experience what individuals with disabilities go through on a day-to-day basis
2. Gain information on how to evaluate good and bad support services
3. Discover how to use empathy to better understand the individual and to provide better person-centered support
4. Develop strategies to encourage a more inclusive community and help individuals speak up for themselves
5. Identify ways of encouraging growth and opportunities to avoid dead ends in jobs and life

This event is approved for Washington State Developmental Disabilities Administration Residential Continuing Education Credits with one hour available for the live event and an additional hour available for the interactive field experience.
