Fall-Winter 2021 EFT Consultation Group

Using Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) as a theoretical basis, Dr. Sutton will provide an introduction to EFT theory, and discuss how to integrate knowledge from Gottman research, and techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing when working with individual issues in a couples context such as ADHD, OCD, panic disorder, and trauma.

EFT is an effective, evidence based approach to working with couples.  Research studies have found that 70-73% of couples move from distress to recovery and 86% show significant improvements when treated with EFT.  This collaborative approach mixes experiential Rogerian techniques with structural, systemic interventions that extend the ideas of attachment theory to romantic relationships.  Advances in the study of emotional regulation support EFT's use of emotion as a primary source of information to the self and to others about needs and motives as a primary route to connecting with attachment figures.

The EFT consultation group will be limited to 3 participants.  We will spend the first 10 min discussing a specific skill or issue related to EFT, then will have two 20 min case presentation (presenting video of session is strongly encouraged).  Dr. Keith Sutton will lead the consultation group and will consult and use role play to help develop consultation group members experience with using Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy.  Participants are required to sign up for the series of five or four consultation sessions, and must have taken the six hour workshop in the particular theory, prior to joining the consultation group.  Dr. Sutton also offers individualized supervision in person, via Zoom, or by phone for those unable to attend the group or seeking one on one consultation.

When: 6 sessions - Fridays - 1 to 2 pm
Session Dates: 9/10, 10/15, 11/12, 12/10, 1/14, 2/11
