Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) has been found to be an effective treatment for trauma. There is controversy surrounded the mechanisms of action in EMDR, but the research shows and the clinicians who use it find it very effective. It incorporates elements of cognitive therapy in its focus on cognitions and use of cognitive interweaves, dynamic therapy in its use of free association and catharsis, neurolinguistic programing in its use of distancing techniques, behavioral therapy in its use of imaginal exposure, and elements from other approaches. Dr. Sutton will teach the theory and techniques of EMDR, and discuss how to apply it to working with trauma and also how to integrate EMDR into everyday practice for a variety of other issues that aren't trauma based.
These consultation groups will be limited to 3 participants. We will spend the first 10 min discussing a specific skill or issue related to EMDR, then will have two 20 min case presentation (presenting video of session is strongly encouraged). Dr. Keith Sutton will lead the consultation group and will consult and use role play to help develop consultation group members experience with using EMDR. Participants are required to sign up for the series of five or four consultation sessions, and must have taken the six hour workshop in the particular theory), prior to joining the consultation group. Dr. Sutton also offers individualized supervision in person, via Skype, or by phone for those unable to attend the group or seeking one on one consultation.
