Analyze & Apply Solutions for Mosquito-Borne Disease Fall 2021 

Calling all upper middle school and high school science teachers!

Join SJCOE STEM Programs and SJC Mosquito & Vector Control District in a workshop to explore a free engineering-based lesson sequence adapted for in person and online learning. We will tour the facility and learn about the best practices of mosquito control.

Upon attending this workshop, you will have access to:

  • NGSS lesson sequence focusing on ecology, biology, behaviors of mosquitoes, mosquito-borne disease prevention, and integrated pest management.  (LS2 - Ecosystems, ETS1 - Engineering, EP&C Principle #5)  (MS - Analyzing & Interpreting Data) (HS - Computional Thinking)
  • Lesson HyperDoc for online learning.
  • A guest speaker from the San Joaquin County Mosquito & Vector Control District to Zoom in to your classroom.

 Cost:  Free, and lunch is provided.

Terms and conditions for Teacher participation:  Teachers receiving the workshop training and stipend will agree to the following:

A. Teach the lesson sequence for a minimum of two class groups/sections for one school year, preferably, two school years.  B. Incorporate/schedule (either virtually or in-person) the San Joaquin County Mosquito & Vector Control District’s representative in one session of the lesson sequence to offer expert advice and answer questions.  C.  Fill out a provided feedback form evaluating the program, reporting the sections of the sequence taught, the number of students attending, and an approximate amount of time spent teaching the program.  D.  Sign an agreement with the above terms before receiving the workshop training.

Stipend:  $250

TCSJ Unit: One professional development unit ($95) (pending approval) available upon completion of the program requirements. 

COVID Protocols:  Face masks are required while we are in the facility. Please pre-screen for COVID symptoms before you arrive. Pre-screen questions will be emailed to all participants prior to the event.  Additional requirements may apply. We will keep you informed as the event approaches.
