Learning From Our Best Teachers: Learning Life's Give and Take

How I Worked with Residential and Vocational Staff to Support My Independence

Join Chuck Goodwin for this series focused on individualized long term supports. There are guest presenters, supplemental field activities and opportunities to interact with the instructor!  Employment, residential and community inclusion providers are encouraged to attend, which is free for everyone to attend!

Lance Walcott has made some incredible changes in his life.  Several years ago he lost his job and was in trouble at his adult family home because of anger management issues.  He made the decision to work on his issues and find ways of dealing with stress, anger, and frustration.  Along the way he also learned to think about other people and found the importance of making contributions in life.   He taught vocational and residential care providers to stand back, listen to him and allow him to find his own strategies in dealing with the ups and downs of life.  He now works at 2 jobs Farelli’s pizza and ENSO as a trainer consultant sharing his experiences.  This class will follow his journey to success and offer insights into how to provide person centered supports to individuals.

Learning objectives:
  • Understand how a person’s motivators can be used to create natural reinforcers on the worksite and in other settings
  • Understand how to make modifications to an environment or task so the person can best succeed and make contributions to others
  • Develop strategies for working with people to develop their own strategies in learning flexibility and dealing with frustration, stress, and working with others
  • Understand how supports can be implemented to help people meet the social and behavioral expectations of different places
  • Consider how to model supports for other people in the person’s life (like residential providers and coworkers)
