Resiliency

with Pat Wagner, Pattern Research

Wednesday, November 3, 2021

10:00 to 11:00 AM

Look up the word resiliency in the dictionary and read the various definitions: Bounce back immediately as a better version of yourself, stronger than ever! Recovery from tragedy, refreshed and renewed! Hardiness! Strength! Plasticity! Meanwhile, in these stressful times most mortals like you and me are grateful if we remember to brush our teeth and get dressed before noon.

Let’s redefine it…Resiliency, among other things, is:

  • Figuring out how to finish a project when you’re the only one to show up while still maintaining good relationships with the people who let you down.
  • Admitting with grace that you messed up and volunteering to make it right.
  • Being able to accept help from others, and, at the same time, be generous, without expecting reciprocity.
  • Finding your own purpose in life to keep you anchored when things go haywire, and
  • Being able to dust yourself off and continue. Again, and again.
Topics include respite and good humor, developing a sense of perspective, finding ways to make small steps when big steps are impossible, learning tips from the experiences of people who have survived physical and emotional trauma, and how library personnel can help themselves and their stakeholders feel more resourceful in hard times.

Presenter:
Pat Wagner has been a library trainer and consultant for over 40 years, working with libraries and allied institutions of all types and sizes. She learned about resiliency growing up in an extended immigrant family where stories were shared, with irreverent laughter, about surviving bad times and celebrating the good. She also is a lifetime Chicago Cubs fan, which taught her patience, humility, and an unreasonably hopeful attitude, which paid off when the team won the World Series in 2016, after a 108-year-long drought.
