FREE Parentpower for the Aptos Community and greater Santa Cruz area: Regaining Emotional Safety After a Tragedy

An Online Program for parents, teachers, and adults caring for kids in the Aptos Community and greater Santa Cruz area

When tragedy strikes - as it recently did at Aptos High - the results are traumatic both for those directly affected and for the broader community. Although we cannot control the fact that a tragedy has taken place, adults can do a great deal to help young people regain their emotional safety in its aftermath.

In this session led by a Senior Kidpower Instructor who is also a parent in the Aptos community, learn skills you and your family can use right away to regain your emotional safety. You'll leave with more strategies to:

  • be a safe, calm person for young people to talk to
  • protect yourself from hurtful, threatening, or offensive words
  • get 'emotional distance' when you decide this is the safest choice
  • stay calm and effective in difficult conversations
  • face upsetting situation with more confidence in your ability to keep yourself emotionally safe
  • recognize and resist emotional coercion
  • effectively get help
  • help young people in your life develop these skills, too.
