This workshop will provide a greater understanding of postpartum and perinatal mood disorders. Screening tools and available resources will also be discussed. Learn about maternal mental health disorders, the differences between disorders, as well as risk factors and treatment options. 

Who Should Attend: 

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize and describe symptoms of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders
  • Identify risk factors, co-morbid conditions and additional considerations
  • Administer screening and assessment tools to pregnant and postpartum women
  • Apply the basics of effective intervention and utilize resources for informed care.

About the Presenter


Sowania Germain, LMHC is a graduate of Lesley University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Counseling Psychology and from Adelphi University’s Derner Institute where she received a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling.

Her Master's clinical rotation took place in several areas where she was in charge of providing care to individuals with chronic mental illnesses including bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety, PTSD and substance abuse. Additionally, Sowania’s specializes in working with women coping with postpartum depression & anxiety and individuals faced with adjustment challenges, anxiety, depression, family conflict, parenting challenges, marital stressors, substance abuse, trauma and cultural adjustment.

Sowania believes that the therapeutic process is a process of self-discovery and growth, which requires work for all participants. She believes in providing a safe, confidential and non-judgmental environment and will work alongside you to sort through the issues you are facing. Throughout this collaborative process, she commits to being honest, direct and compassionate. During your sessions, she will utilize a variety of integrative techniques, including cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoanalytic interventions and strengths-based model.
