2021 Virtual Contractors Academy

Oakland Unified School District Facilities Planning Department in partnership with Alameda County Public Works (ACPWA) is offering its Annual Construction Contractors' Academy FREE to all attendees!

This year's Academy will be held virtually to ensure the safety and security of our presenters and attendees. This 3-part series will take place from 10/14-10/28 and will break down all components of how to successfully bid a Public Works contract. 

Session 1 - Thursday October 14, 2021 10am-12pm
Basics of Bidding and Public Contracting
This session will provide an overview of how cities, counties and other public agencies go about bidding for construction, Key points covered include:
Basic requirements for all contractors
How to find projects to bid
Importance of Scope Letters
Presented by Ed Duarte

Session 2 - Thursday October 21, 2021 10am-12pm
An Overview on Bid Preparation and Project Management
The second session will cover the following points on Estimating, Bidding & Project Management in its first hour:
Spead sheet Templates for Bid Proposals
Tips on Pricing
Basics of Managing Your Project
Presented by Ed Duarte
In the second hour, we will be joined by staff from our host agencies - OUSD and ACOWA - to discuss upcoming opportunities, agency bid processes and other general information regarding working with small, local contractors.

Session 3 - Thursday October 28, 2021 10am-12pm
 Resources, for Your Business
The third session will cover resources for partcipants to better position themselves to bid on public contracts. Some topics covered will include:
Certifications - presented by Sheldon Jefferson, Luster National
Introduction to Alameda County's Contractor Technical Assistance Program-presented by Carol Henry, Merriwether and Williams
Important membership organizations for small, local contractors
Upcoming opportunities with other Alameda County public agencies:
 General Services Agency
  • East Bay Municipal Utilities District

Small/local/minority and woman-owned businesses are encouraged to attend!

Mr. Ed Duarte, CEO of Aztec Consultants, will return as the instructor for the 2021 Academy. Mr. Duarte has served as mentor to many construction subcontracting firms throughout northern California and has taught numerous technical assistance workshops for the Alameda County Public Works Agency, Caltrans, the City of Oakland, Port of Oakland and the Small Business Administration.
