It's All About That Bow!

Welcome to Getting Together with Gary! On the first Saturday of each month, ISB founder Gary Karr hosts an online salon, inviting captivating guests to share stories, ideas and points of view about the musical life. On Saturday, October 2, Gary will be getting together with...

Olivier Babaz, Peter Lloyd and Scott Pingel, for an hour-plus that's All About That Bow! From solo and orchestra repertoire to jazz and everything in between, we'll be exploring different strokes for different bass folks, and learn from these bona fide bow masters:

Olivier Babaz is a sought after bassist and composer pursuing multiple artistic projects and collaborations. Born and raised in Paris, Olivier has lived and worked in Montreal since 2010. He's released five albums, including his latest, Fragmentsin which the compositions find their way between modern jazz and acoustic rock. Olivier has been developing the combination of kalimba and acoustic bass, opening the possibilities of polyrhythmic playing with a unique texture. He is a tutor and instructor at DiscoverDoubleBass.com and holds frequent masterclasses and clinics. In 2019, he launched Midnight Caffeine Music to coordinate projects in Montreal, Paris and Reunion Island.

Peter Lloyd is on the faculties of the Colburn Conservatory of Music and Indiana University and has served as a member of the ISB board of directors. He was previously a member of The Philadelphia Orchestra and principal bass of The Minnesota Orchestra. An active chamber musician, Peter is a regular participant with the Marlboro School of Music, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Music Northwest, Music From Angel Fire, the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, Brooklyn Chamber Music Society, Chicago Chamber Musicians, the Boston Chamber Music Society, Brandenburg Ensemble, BargeMusic and La Musica.

Scott Pingel became principal bass of the San Francisco Symphony in 2004, having previously served in that position with the Charleston Symphony and as a member of the New World Symphony. He has also served as guest principal with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Canada. Scott teaches at the San Franciso Conservatory of Music. As a jazz musician, he has worked with such artists as Michael Brecker, Geoff Keezer and James Williams. In 2019 Scott teamed up with members of the San Francisco Symphony and the heavy metal band Metallica for two shows that were shown in nearly 3,700 theaters worldwide, making his bass solo very likely the most-viewed in history!
