The Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA)  Regional Nurses invite the DDA nurses (RN CM/DNs), for a Statewide Nurse Meeting and training on "Special Smiles: Dental Care For Special Needs Individuals" on  December 16, 2021 from 10am - 2pm.

Program sponsored by: DDA Regional Nurses &  Eastern Shore Area Health Education Center

Goal: To work together as an interprofessional team to understand the importance of good oral health as it relates to individuals with special needs. 
 
Learning Objectives: 
  1. Understand that individuals with special needs have more oral health issues than the general population 
  2. Understand the correlation between oral and systemic health
  3. Be able to list ways to help prevent oral disease
  4. Recognize signs of oral abuse
  5. Help special needs individuals access dental care and establish a dental home

  • Mary Backley, Executive Director with Maryland Dental Action Coalition
Caitlin Donohue-Vega, RDH, BS is the Oral Health Outreach Coordinator with the Eastern Shore Area Health Education Center (ESAHEC)  Mrs. Donohue-Vega is a 2009 graduate from Salisbury University with a major in Biochemistry and a minor in Spanish. She pursued her dental hygiene degree from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry where she graduated in 2013. Mrs. Donohue-Vega has worked in both general and specialty dental practices as well as the public health sector for a total of 19 years in the dental field.
 
Arlene Guagliano, DHSc, RDH – Dr. Guagliano is a Regional Oral Health Coordinator for the Office of Oral Health with Maryland’s Department of Health. She received an AS degree in dental hygiene at Farmingdale State College, earned a Bachelor of Science degree with certificates in gerontology, home care administration and family counseling at St. Joseph’s College. She continued her education earning a MS degree  from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, majoring in healthcare policy and  management. Then received her  degree as Doctor of Health Science from Nova Southeastern University specializing in interprofessional healthcare delivery with a concentration on vulnerable populations. 
 
Mary Backley is Chief Executive Officer of the Maryland Dental Action Coalition (MDAC). She has more than thirty years of nonprofit leadership experience, including more than two decades serving the field of health philanthropy, and more than a decade serving veterans and their families.
