Keeping Your Nonprofit Going: Compliance and the First
Two Years
*This will be an live online workshop via Zoom*
Starting a nonprofit is more than simply filing papers – there are lots of items to accomplish in the first two years to ensure you are legally compliant, effective at programming, and able to manage the various aspects of your organization. Whether you plan to serve your local community, or the entire world, there are best practices that all nonprofits must follow in order to make an impact.
This workshop will cover the various practices nonprofit start-ups should implement within the first two years of incorporation to increase their chances of having impactful programs, effective management, and good governance.
In this workshop we will go over:
- Defining and Navigating a Community Problem
- Building a Strong Board of Directors
- Crafting Compelling Communications
- Designing and Measuring Effective Programs
- Accounting, Taxes, and the IRS

Presented by Colton Strawser
Colton C. Strawser, Ph.D. is a certified SCORE mentor and volunteer. Colton is Certified Fund-Raising Executive, AFP Master Trainer®, Certified Nonprofit Professional, and Certified Facilitator of the Core Capacity Assessment Tool with TCC Group. As a practitioner and academic, Dr. Strawser’s consulting work primarily focuses on organizational assessment, program evaluation, capacity building, and research. Most of his nonprofit experience involves working with foundations, education nonprofits, and social service agencies. He has served as a university faculty member where he has taught courses on nonprofit management, fundraising, community development, and program evaluation. Dr. Strawser completed his Ph.D. in Nonprofit and Philanthropic Leadership at The Nonprofit Institute at the University of San Diego.
Cancellation Policy:
If you need to cancel you must notify us via email 7 days prior to the workshop date. A confirmation of your cancellation will be sent once it is received. Calling the SCORE Fort Worth office is not acceptable for a cancellation notice. All no-shows or cancellations after 7 days will lose their paid workshop fees.
All workshop fees must be paid in advance prior to workshop date. For security purposes we will not be able to accept payment for workshops at the door unless workshop is being held at James E. Guinn complex in Fort Worth, TX.
CANCELLATION NOTICES MUST BE IN WRITING AND EMAILED to: Jenny Day at ch.admin0120@scorevolunteer.org. Any other means of cancellation will not be accepted.
