Part 5: Safe Roads

The National Center for Rural Road Safety (Rural Safety Center) is hosting a FREE, 1.5-hour online webinar.

Series Description
No doubt you have been hearing the terms Safe System Approach and Traffic Safety Culture over the past few years, but are you also wondering:

• how to explain these terms to your peers and superiors?
• how these terms apply to your agency?
• how they fit with the work you do everyday?
• how they can help improve safety on a rural road?

If so, then this 6-part series is for you!

The Improving Rural Road Safety with the Safe System Approach 6-part webinar series will explore how a Safe System Approach (SSA) can be applied to rural areas, discuss strategies rural areas are already using that fit within a SSA, and identify additional SSA techniques that can be applied to improve rural road safety.

Webinar Description 

In Part 5 of the series, we will focus on the Safe Road Element through the lens of actions agencies can take. We will examine how to address the safe road element for roadway departures, pedestrians, and underserved communities. Additionally, we will hear about a comprehensive, systemic rural road safety program.

 Additional webinars will include Part 6: Post-Crash Care (December).

Part 5 Webinar Outcomes
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

• List how the 4 pillars of FoRRRwD relate to the Safe System Approach
• Name FoRRRwD countermeasures that can be applied to create safer roads
• Describe the STEP-UC model being used to engage historically underserved communities and empower them to advocate for their pedestrian facility needs
• List pedestrian facility improvements that will lead to safer walking environments
• Explain the steps South Carolina DOT took to create their Rural Road Safety Program
• List the systemic engineering solutions used by SCDOT’s Rural Road Safety Program

Target Audience

This training is directed towards a very broad safety audience including, but not limited to, law enforcement, planners, engineers, first responders, elected officials, public health, tourism agencies, and safety culture experts. 

Course Presenters

Dick Albin, Senior Safety Engineer, Safety & Design Team FHWA Resource Center
Dick joined FHWA as a Safety Engineer with the FHWA Resource Center’s Safety and Design Team in June, 2008. Prior to joining FHWA, Dick worked for 15 years with the Washington State Department of Transportation and for 6 years for the New York State Department of Transportation.  He graduated from the University of Wyoming with a BS in Civil Engineering and is a licensed Professional Engineer in Washington State. Dick chaired the TRB Roadside Safety Design Committee from 2009-2015 and is also a member of several NCHRP panels that oversee research on roadside safety issues. Dick is one of the leads for the Every Day Counts (EDC) initiative to Focus on Reducing Rural Roadway Departures.

Rod Turochy, Director, Alabama Local Technical Assistance Program
Rod is the Director of the Alabama Transportation Assistance Program and a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He has been at Auburn since 2002 and has led he LTAP center since October 2018. His interests in road design and traffic engineering include pedestrian safety and facilities.
