Inclusion Base Camp Cohort 

Inclusion Base Camp Cohort will provide an opportunity for the expanded learning program staff to build confidence and capacity to successfully and meaningfully include children and youth with disabilities or additional needs. In this cohort, we will create a cohesive vision of inclusion and behavior support, enhance our understanding of general behavior challenges, identify local, regional, state, and national supports and resources available, explore inclusive best practices and necessary supports for youth with more complex inclusion needs using a strength-based approach, and dive into methods to foster positive family relationships and communication to support inclusion.  Session descriptions are below.

The six-session cohort will meet weekly on Wednesday mornings (10:00am - 12:00pm PT) from January 26 to March 2, 2022. Session dates:

  • February 23, 2022
  • March 2, 2022

Cohort cost: $160
Cohort cost with Betty Gray Scholarship*: $60

*Licensed child care staff may be eligible for the Betty Gray Cohort scholarship to cover $100 of the cost (see below for requirements and deadlines)

                     

                     Participant Requirements

  • Must work in or directly support K-12 program
  • Participants commit to attend trainings (at least 80% live), complete pre-work and reflection components on weekly basis
  • Participants must complete pre-survey, individual session evaluations throughout the series, and a post-cohort survey
  • Create a plan for applying knowledge through systematic implementation in program/organization.
  • Licensed child care staff may be eligible for the Betty Gray Cohort scholarship to cover $100 of the cost (see below for requirements and deadlines)

                     

                                 Timeline

  • Register to Participate by January 19th 
  • All participants will be asked to complete a commitment form & pre-survey by January 24th 
  • Attend weekly trainings January 26 - March 2
  • Complete reflective post-cohort survey by March 9th

                     

                               Scholarships

Scholarships are available through the Betty Gray Early Childhood Scholarship at the Oregon Center for Career Development (OCCD) for staff of licensed childcare facilities. When submitting your scholarship application, please be sure to select "Cohort" in Section 2 of the application. Limitations apply, find out more about scholarship eligibility HERE.

To use a Betty Gray Scholarship with this regular cohort, participants must be at an Oregon Reigstry Step 1-8. 

If you plan to apply for the Betty Gray Scholarship through OCCD, you may select the scholarship discounted price during registration. Be sure to submit your scholarship application to OCCD no later than January 10th to ensure you receive your Approval Letter from OCCD by January 19th. Participants registered using the scholarship price must submit Approval Letter to OregonASK by January 20th in order to secure their spot in the cohort. 

 

                Workshop Session Descriptions

Session One: Inclusion and Belonging (January 26)

Participants will examine the experience of youth with disabilities in their program, will be able to explain Person-First Language (PFL) and Identify-First Language (IFL) and will understand the basics of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508. Set 1 | SN (pending) | 2 hours

Session TwoPowerful Partnerships for an Inclusive Afterschool Program (February 2) 

Participants will learn the benefits of partnering with both families and community resources. We will explore what questions are okay and not okay to ask, and the most effective way to gather information. Set 2 | FCS & SN | 2 hours (Pending)

Session ThreeUnderstanding the “Why” Behind Behavior (February 9)

In this session, participants will identify what behavior is and is not. We will investigate the ABC (Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence) cycle of behavior. Set 2 | HGD & UGB (pending) | 2 hours

Session Four: Respectful Accommodations (February 16)

In this session, participants will learn ways to go beyond just reasonable accommodations to create ones that are respectful. We will explore sensory, visual, physical, auditory, and physical accommodations. Participants will develop a list of accommodations to implement in their program(s). Set 2 | SN (pending) | 2 hours

Session FiveCreating Caring Spaces by Understanding Trauma (February 23)

Participants will use a Trauma-Informed Lens to practice applying 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace. They will also examine opportunities for incorporating coping and calming strategies for youth in their afterschool or summer program(s). Set 2 | HSN (pending) | 2 hours

Session Six: Designing Inclusive Expanded Learning Programs (March 2)

Participants will use knowledge and strategies from the previous sessions to create an implementation process for integrating intentional inclusive practices. Set 2 | SN (pending) | 2 hours
