WNC Community Workshop Event:

Accessing ABA Services

Gathering documentation is a huge challenge for many families, so we are partnering with Key Autism Services (KAS) to host a live, In-person workshop and a virtual workshop. You will have the opportunity to work with us and KAS to gather all of the required documentation for services to get started.

**Dinner will be served: Pizza & Beverages**

**Spanish-speaking interpretation and support will be available.**

Services:

ABA Services are provided by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBT). BCBAs are master’s level clinicians and serve as the clinical lead for the ABA service line. RBTs are high school/bachelor’s level technicians and they serve as the direct service provider to the client.

BCBAs provide three distinct types of service: Assessment, Parent Training and Supervision. An initial assessment will be completed for each client. We typically use a criterion referenced assessment tool like the ABLLS-R or VB-MAPP to clearly identify the skill deficits and goals for treatment. The BCBA will make treatment recommendations that include frequency and duration of each service line. These assessments are updated every six months and submitted to the payor for ongoing treatment authorization. Parent Training is also provided by the BCBA. It’s a critical component of our service line and we always maximize the time by reviewing the treatment plan, teaching & practicing implementation of strategies/plans, and discussing current performance and next steps. Supervision is provided to the RBT every week by the BCBA. This is time for the BCBA to update the teaching procedures, model new strategies, observe and provide feedback to the RBT, and probe new skills with the client. Generally, we try to provide supervision for 10-20% of the total amount of direct service. If a client receives 20 hours/week of direct therapy from an RBT, the BCBA would provide 2-4 hours/week of supervision.

RBTs provide one service: Direct intervention. They are the implementers of the program and do not make formal treatment recommendations to the family. The RBTs work most closely with the client and provide at least 10 hours/week. They can provide 30 or more hours/week, depending on the client’s needs.

Referrals:

In order to be eligible for ABA services in NC, individuals must have a confirmed diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. The diagnostic evaluation must include a “scientifically validated diagnostic tool, or tools, for diagnosis of ASD”. A Service Order is also required which must be signed by a MD, OD or LP.  Individuals must be under the age of 21. For children under the age of 3, a provisional diagnosis will suffice for eligibility.
