Digital Black and White & Infrared Photography Workshop

Early spring is a wonderful time to photograph in the greater Charleston, South Carolina area. In this workshop participants will learn black and white photography from selecting a subject, to shooting in color or infrared, converting to B&W, and editing using a mix of photo editing software.

In a world of color, black and white photography offers the photographer the opportunity to get back to the basic essence of photography – the importance of visual design, composition and exposure. That is why well executed black and white images have such enduring appeal. But shooting for, editing and printing black and white images require different considerations than working in color. TodRambling through Forest Fog by Mary Louise Raveseay’s digital cameras and digital darkroom software programs provide phenomenal advantages for producing black and white images that would make Ansel Adams envious.

In this hands-on workshop, Mary Louise will explain how to identify scenes with strong black and white image potential. In addition, she will explain how to make black and white images using infrared light for a striking effect.

The greater Charleston, South Carolina area offers a wealth of excellent photography opportunities for black and white photography.  Some planned photo shoots include:

  • Brookgreen Sculpture Garden
  • Historic Magnolia Cemetery
  • Antique Fire Engines
  • Boone Hall Plantation
  • Oceanfront Piers

Not only will you be able to capture these scenes in color, Mary Louise will share her step-by-step approach for optimally converting images from color to B&W using Adobe Lightroom Classic, Silver Efex Pro and Photoshop. In addition to photographing in the field, participants will work on editing their own images with guidance and feedback from Mary Louise.

Who Should Attend

Experienced beginner, intermediate and advanced DSLR or mirrorless camera users.  Participants must know basic camera operation (using Aperture Priority & Shutter Priority modes) and have some basic experience with editing using Adobe Lightroom software.
