The investigation of the death of another person is the greatest responsibility that can be bestowed upon any law enforcement officer.  This 3-day course provides investigators who have previous “hands-on” experience in death investigations or those that have previously completed Basic Death Investigation training with a totally unique opportunity to receive training in both Advanced Death Investigations and Cold Case Death Investigations (which by their very own nature are advanced death investigations) in one integrated course.

The Advanced Death and Homicide Investigations course will provide the attendee with training in the investigative skills necessary for the complex death investigation.  The class will further provide the attendee with developments in forensic evidence, to include digital evidence, that are necessary to properly conduct advanced death investigations, well beyond what an attendee receives in an introductory death investigation course.  The course will also focus on important factors such as, interview and interrogation methods and strategies, explore the relationships between missing persons case investigations, and more.

All cold case investigations are advanced death investigations, but not all advanced death investigations are cold case investigations. Thus, a portion of the course will provide the attendee with specific guidance on how to work cold case death investigations, provide training and insight into the strategy of cold case homicides, and provide training and case studies addressing the development of forensic evidence in decades-old cold cases. This portion of the course will also focus on the selection strategy when deciding what cases would be the most practical cases to work.

The entire 3-day course will present the attendee not only with advanced investigative techniques and strategy but more importantly demonstrate the application of those tactics and skills to cold case murder investigations and resulting trials. Time permitting, the course will also provide opportunity for a “round table” type forum allowing attendees to bring and present a cold case from their jurisdiction.

Based on the information presented in the Advanced Death Investigations portion of the course of instruction the student will be able to:

  • Understand the processes for transition from preliminary investigation to crime scene management at a death scene.
  • Understand the common mistakes made as investigations transition from preliminary investigation to the crime scene management phase.
  • Be able to recognize the tasks necessary to successfully complete investigative follow up once a case transitions from crime scene management to the follow up phase.
  • Understand the latest requirements and language needed for Google Geofencing Warrants in addition to understanding the premise behind these types of warrants.  Mobile Device/Digital Evidence Guidelines.
  • Define the tasks that need to be accomplished to successfully identify a suspect in homicide cases and how to handle suspects once they are in custody.
  • Advanced Interview and Interrogation with emphasis on the verbal and non-verbal indicators.
  • Child Death Investigations.
  • 911 call analysis.
  • Understand the importance of working with the Medical Examiner/Coroner in specialized death cases such as child deaths.
  • The importance of Missing Person Investigations and proper techniques to be used from the outset of receiving the first report of the missing person
  • Review and discuss the history and the background of cold case units
  • Define cold case units.
  • Assess the purpose and need for a Cold Case Homicide Unit.
  • Analyze and understand the reasons homicide investigations go “cold” and how those factors affect their future re-investigation.
  • Define/assess the process for selecting unsolved homicide cases to investigate and understanding the elements to be considered in the review of a cold case.
  • Prioritization process/ranking scale for cold case selection.
  • Discuss the cold case review process.
  • Understand how the nature of the evidence, which prompts new review, will guide your cold case investigation and prosecution.
  • Cold case investigative steps and techniques.
  • Serial Killers and Serial Offenders.
  • Latent Fingerprinting and the Next Generation Identification System [NGI].
  • Advances in Forensic testing of physical evidence: Familial DNA testing and Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG) and its role in solving cold cases
  • Common mistakes and lessons learned.
  • Cold case presentation featuring a case that garnered national attention and featured on media outlets such as People Magazine, The Dr. Oz Show, and more.
