Who Should Attend

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field. 

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to define and explain the basic principles of motivational interviewing
  • Participants will be able to explain the usefulness of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
  • Participants will be able to describe and demonstrate the four skills of motivational interviewing: open-ended questions, affirmations, (empathic) reflections and summaries (OARS)
  • Participants will be able to describe what sustain talk and discord are and how to address them

The workshop will provide an understanding and application of the basic skills of motivational interviewing and the use of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in clinical practice. Through didactic and experiential teaching, participants will learn the person-centered skills and techniques of Motivational Interviewing for application and use in their clinical practice. The workshop will include the definition, foundation, and efficacy of Motivational Interviewing. It will also include an experience of Motivational Interviewing and wrap up.
