This event is made possible by the Minority Outreach and Technical Assistance Grant (MOTA) in the Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities, Maryland Department of Health.

Description:

The COVID pandemic has affected chronic disease management, including diabetes. COVID has caused a delay in diagnosis and has impacted management of these conditions. Additionally, there is emerging evidence that shows that COVID can cause myriad chronic conditions. These include long haul COVID, cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus. Join us as we discuss COVID and diabetes - where we are and where we've been. 

 Objectives:

1. Identify the impact of COVID -19 on individuals with chronic diseases to include diabetes

2. Describe the myriad of chronic conditions that has occurred in individuals as a result of COVID-19

 

Presenter: Dr. Michelle A. Folsom-Elder 

Dr. Folsom-Elder is a Board-Certified family physician who practiced in Calvert County from 2008-2020. She joined the Calvert County Health Department in July of 2020, midway through our first year of the pandemic. She has an interest in chronic disease management, including diabetes and hypertension.

 

Description:

This presentation will explore practical solutions for disparities that affect the health and wellbeing of minorities who represent 13% of the population.  More specifically, Dr. Brathwaite will discuss a SMART driven plan for the next 3-5 years that can be adopted by a collaborative of minority leaders.  Please join us as we envision a social and transformative change ahead.

 

Objectives:

1. Identify practical solutions for disparities that affect the health and wellbeing of minorities

2.  Analyze a SMART-driven plan that may be adapted by a collaborative of minority leaders to combat disparities.

 

Presenter: Dr Noel Brathwaite, PhD, MSPH

Dr. Brathwaite currently leads the Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities for the Maryland Department of Health. His mission is to develop more healthy and prosperous communities across the state, zip code by zip code.
