Children's Mental Health Awareness Event 2022
This year Tri County CMO and the Family Support Organization HSW would like to invite you to join us in celebrating Children's Mental Health Awareness Day on May 5th . The event will be held at Dreamweaver Equine Center in Ringoes, NJ. The program will include presentations from Susan Gibbs, MS, LPC and Deb McKernan-Ace, MOT/OTR, COTA. The evening will also include food, door prizes, and an optional tour of the Dreamweaver Equine facility. The event will also honor Assemblyman Anthony Verrelli for his work in mental health on the Assembly. Please register no later than April 28th. Space is limited and parking will be offsite. Please note any special transportation assistance if needed.
Special guest speakers include:
Deb McKernan-Ace, MOT/OTR, COTA
Deb is currently the Program Director for the Occupational Therapy Assistant program at Rutgers University. She has been in OTA academia for more than 25 years, educating future OTA professionals and helping them understand their role with children and adolescents in various practice settings. Deb has extensive background working with children and adolescents in developing strategies and resources for wellness and mental health concerns. She developed the first mandatory training session in Wisconsin for school staff on Sensory Processing and creating classroom environments that support students with all types of challenges. Deb also spent 6 years working as an inpatient occupational therapist at a child/adolescent behavioral health hospital, guiding staff in understanding the therapeutic benefits of teaching non-medication wellness strategies to reduce symptoms of mental health diagnoses. She was also the lead participator on a hospital grant to reduce the use of restraints with the implementation of a state of the art sensory room. Deb has shared her expertise with county and state agencies in both Wisconsin and New Jersey in assisting them in thinking differently in how to support these young people.
Susan Gibbs, MS, LPC - Dynamic Counseling
Susan has a Master’s in Counseling and Clinical Health Psychology, with more than 18 years of experience in community mental health, school, and OP settings. Susan was the director of an acute short-term residential program for adults, program coordinator of Children’s Mobile Response, Program Coordinator of an alternative high school for students at risk of being placed out-of-district, and is currently the sole proprietor of her own private practice working with children, adolescents, families and adults. She holds a current certification as a Nurtured Heart Approach Advanced Trainer, and has held certifications as a Certified Mental Health Screener and Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner in the past. With her experience as an II-C, Nurtured Heart Trainer and work in an alternative high school, she has specific experience and training in school refusal, relevant to school and home environments.
This invitation is also extended to all staff of children’s mental health services in the region as well as our system partners (DCP&P, CMRSS, FSO and Youth Partnership), respective CIACC (Children’s InterAgency Coordinating Council) and YSC (Youth Services Commission) member agencies, tri-county NAMI, Intensive In-Community and Intensive In-Home provider agencies. These agencies are encouraged to register for a table to connect with community participants and share their services. Local civic leaders are also invited to attend this special event highlighting the need for advocacy of children's mental health services.
Please come prepared for a fun evening outside. This event will be held rain or shine, with indoor and tent covered spaces available.
Parent/Guardian must attend (or have a responsible adult substitute) in order for their youth to attend. Please RSVP by April 28th. Please note that we cannot guarantee ticket availability for RSVPs received after April 28th.
