Child death cases can be some of the most difficult cases any detective will ever have to work. Some detectives have young children of their own and separating the personal from the business can be an up-front challenging task. Having to overcome the devastating nature of child death cases in and of themselves at the outset of the investigation will be what sets apart a successful detective to be able work such a case. The reality of child death cases is that the child will never experience what life has to offer to its fullest. Thus, it is incumbent upon us as detectives to determine why. Knowing what to look for in child death cases are crucial when it comes to determining death by natural causes as opposed to infant homicide.

This two-day course will explore the ins and outs of these types of cases, starting with the first 911 call, all the way through to the completion of the case. It will explore the investigative measures that will need to be taken during the preliminary investigation, examining the medical history of the parents, interpreting the autopsy findings by attending the autopsy and working with the Medical Examiner’s Office, follow up investigation, including interview strategies when dealing with the parents, stepparents, and caretakers of the child, and charging considerations in cases of abuse and/or homicide. Numerous case examples and scenarios will be presented throughout the course to enhance the concepts and principles offered during the course.
