This is the information page about the fall foundations classes: Bones of Storytelling and Scene vs. Exposition.

These two classes are offered in the AM, on Tuesday and the PM on Thursday as follows.

AM Bones: Sept 13 to Nov. 15. SvsE: Nov. 20, Dec. 5, Jan. 10-24, 2023 - Times: 11:30-1:30 p.m.

This class has been taught and modified more than a a dozen times since its inception in 2015. Every year is it recorded anew and updated as Jennifer's thinking on story and literary method evoloves. This material is thrilling but also dense. Specifically with Bones, we've found that writers need time to digest. Once they've watched the teachings a few times, they are more excited to connect with other writers, ask questions and share what they've learned.

Bones: You are provided with a site page link and password that holds all ten teaching videos, as well as your assignment, and what's coming in the next video. You watch your first video and then come to class ready to connect with your teacher and fellow writers. We will pair you up, debrief, and refine what you've learned, preparing you for the next teaching and repeat this process for the ten weeks of Bones.

Scene vs. Exposition: These are live classes taught on the spot with handouts and discussion. The first two are informative and lecture based, with discussion. The last three are workshop based and you'll be welcomed to start sharing your writing in a workshop format.

This is my stack of long loved and well used teachings books. They are the basis of our program.

The Seven Basic Plots by Christopher Booker

Story by Robert McKee

13 Ways of Looking at the Novel by Jane Smiley

From Where You Dream by Robert Olen Butler

Story Engineering by Larry Brooks.

You have the option to get these books yourself, or I will and send to you directly, along with a binder of all your handouts that have been printed, slipped into page protectors, and organized for your convenience.

Please note, you DO NOT NEED these teaching materials. All your handouts are linked and printable.

IN SUM: This fifteen week program teaches the foundations for literary success: concept, theme, plot, character development, structure, antagonistic forces, setting, scene, and exposition. It's all here. You get to know your teachers and your classmates, and grow into a community that is safe, welcoming, and most of all, supportive.

Once you've successfully completed this program, you'll be welcome to continue with Blackbird in workshopping classes that continue to cultivate your craft, grow your voice, and help you toward reaching your goals. It could be a book you intend to leave for your family, or self publish. It could be that you'd like to pursue traditional publishing or start getting your work out to literary journals or online. No matter your goals, we are here to help you from beginning to end. This class is your beginning! Welcome.
