Who Should Attend

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field. 

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will increase comfort in talking to adolescents and their caregivers about suicide and NSSI
  • Participants will learn to conduct a comprehensive risk assessment for adolescents using evidence-based assessment tools
  • Participants will develop an individually tailored safety plan to determine when to refer for a higher level of care
  • Participants will be able to conduct a functional analysis of NSSI and suicidal behavior to use in treatment
  • Participants will be able to identify evidence-based treatment approaches for sucidial behavior and NSSI in adolescents

This workshop will provide mental health professionals with guidance on how to assess and treat suicidal ideation/behavior and NSSI in adolescents. Participants will learn how to conduct comprehensive risk assessments using evidence-based tools, develop individualized safety plans, and determine the need for a higher level of care. The workshop will also provide an overview of evidence-based treatment approaches, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), for adolescent suicidal behavior and NSSI. Special topics covered will include navigating family dynamics when working with adolescents presenting with high-risk behaviors, including managing issues pertaining to confidentiality. Participants will complete experiential activities to reinforce learning, and case examples will be provided.

About the Presenters

Jessica McCurdy, J.D., Ph.D. is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Child Outpatient Psychiatry Department at Stony Brook University Medical Center. She is a licensed clinical psychologist with expertise in treating children, adolescents, and adults using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Parent Management Training (PMT). Dr. McCurdy specializes in the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders, Borderline Personality Disorder, suicidal ideation and behavior, and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) using evidence-based treatments. She is a member of the Adolescent DBT team, leads an Adolescent DBT Group, and is a supervising psychologist for psychology interns, externs, and psychiatry fellows.

Dr. McCurdy completed her Bachelor of Arts at the University of South Florida, where she graduated summa cum laude. She started her professional career as an attorney after obtaining her J.D. from Georgetown University Law School. As a passionate advocate for children in the juvenile justice system, Dr. McCurdy realized that she would be able to have a greater impact on the lives of at-risk children through the development and implementation of intervention and prevention programs. She obtained her Ph.D. in Clinical Forensic Psychology from John Jay College and completed an APA accredited clinical child internship at Central Regional Hospital in North Carolina. As a Postdoctoral Fellowship through the Stony Brook University KPC-MBCRC Consortium Program, she initiated a DBT program for adolescents through the Mind Body Clinical Research Center. 

Amy Hyoeun Lee, Ph.D. is a full-time postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Psychology at Stony Brook University, and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Health as a DBT-A program clinician. Dr. Lee completed her Ph.D. in the Child and Adolescent Track at St. John’s University and an APA-accredited internship in the Stony Brook Consortium Internship Program, Child Track. Throughout her training, she has had extensive experience delivering evidence-based therapies for children, adolescents, and families in a community-based outpatient settings and across levels of care in hospital systems. Her clinical expertise is in working with marginalized youth with significant interpersonal trauma histories. Dr. Lee’s research focuses on addressing disparities in access to evidence-based trauma-specific care for underserved youth and families.
