The CDOT Wells Wentworth Connector Section 3 project is a new CDOT roadway project that when complete will connect Wentworth from Chinatown to Wells Street at the Chicago’s South Loop Central Business district at Roosevelt. The Project consists of over a half mile of new roadway that requires installation of utilities and construction of 2 railroad bridges under live train service for the roadway viaduct crossings.

This presentation will focus on the Canadian National Rail Road Bridge over Wentworth with emphasis on the Railroad Bridge Design Innovations for Roll-in Outage and Live Rail Service Construction.  As engineers we are constantly solving complex problems that have a direct impact on schedule, cost, and quality. Often times the solution is straight-forward and simple, yet, in some cases an iterative design process across multiple stakeholders and subject matter experts is necessary to obtain the optimum outcomes.

The Canadian National Rail Road (CNRR) over Wentworth Bridge is an excellent example of innovation and collaboration.  Originally let by the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) to FH Paschen (FHP) contractor as a thru-girder bridge, with the goal of a grade separation to promote development of “The 78” and extension of Wentworth Avenue to connect the Loop to Chinatown, the project was redesigned to deck plate girder railroad bridge to accommodate four different track alignments during the relocation of the Metra Line to the west.  There are 29 71” deep girders spanning 91’-0” bearing to bearing.  This presentation will focus on the iterative design process and construction execution from the project team of CDOT, Knight, WSP, FHP and Canadian National Railroad to resolve the tight access schedule windows and competing constraints associated with accelerated railroad bridge construction.


Frank “Sonny” Jaramilla

Frank “Sonny” Jaramilla, PE, is the Resident Engineer of the and Project Manager at WSP USA Inc. Sonny has functioned as the Resident Engineer and Construction Manager for various movable bridge and accelerated bridge construction projects for over 15 years. 

Scott Paloian

Scott Paloian, PE, is the Assistant Resident Engineer for the project.  Scott has worked phase 3 high profile projects in key roles on the construction management team for his entire career with agencies such as CDOT, Department of Aviation, and the City of Chicago.

Jeff Spiekermann

Jeff Spiekermann, PE, is the Design Project Manager and Civil Engineer of Record for the Wells Wentworth Section 3 Project. He is an alumni of The University of Illinois and has 25 years of experience with Knight E/A, Inc.
