John Sperry, Ph.D.


Dr. Jon Sperry, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Lynn University and is also a staff therapist at the Counseling and Psychological Services at Florida Atlantic University. He is currently the co-editor of the Journal of Individual Psychology (JIP). He has co-authored six psychotherapy textbooks and has given lectures in 22 different countries.

Motivational Interviewing for Practitioners 

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an encouraging counseling approach that helps to elicit and strengthen motivation for change in counseling, coaching, and education settings.

Over 200 controlled clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing among clients with various presenting issues. This course will include various MI demonstrations and counseling practice opportunities. 

 Learning objectives:

  • Define Motivational Interviewing (MI) 
  • Define the 4 core principles of MI
  • Summarize the empirical support of the MI counseling approach 
  • Demonstrate the following MI skills: OARS (open ended questions, affirmations, reflections, summarizations) 
  • Demonstrate the decisional balance technique 
  • Demonstrate the readiness to change scaling question 
  • Practice MI in dyads during the workshop 

Cost: $140 (including 7 CEUs)

Workshop Cancellation and Refund Policy: 

  • All cancellations must be made at least 10 days prior to the scheduled workshop. Registered participants who provide proper notice (10 days or more) will be credited, minus a 25% workshop fee. For registered participants who cancel less than 10 days prior to the workshops, credit towards a future workshop will be provided. This credit must be used within 1 year of the original workshop date (no cash refunds). The registered participant may invite another person to substitute their place in the workshop (in which they are registered) at any time at no charge.
