In January 2022, the graphic novel The Maus, by Art Spiegelman, was banned by a Tennessee School board. Incredible to believe that even today, with information of all sorts swirling around us, books are still being banned because of content deemed questionable.
Join me August 6 to discuss the graphic novel depicting the atrocities of the Nazis during World War II. This is the first time the Great Books Council of San Francisco is tackling a Graphic Novel and be assured this novel is worth it. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and banned not only in the US but in Germany and Russia, the novel characterizes the Jews as Mice and the Nazis as Cats. Doing so makes the story more heart wrenching and poignant.
In our morning session we will cover Book 1 and in the afternoon we cover Book 2. Our discussion will cover the text and the drawings as well; the combination is what makes a graphic novel relay its vital points.
I do hope you will join me on August 6 for this ground-breaking event. I look forward to seeing you on Zoom!
