Join us for a unique tour of a mile-long renovation project of Cherry Creek in southeast Denver. Primarily done for flood control, the project was undertaken as a partnership between Mile High Flood District, Denver Water, Denver Parks and Recreation and Arapahoe County Open Space. Of particular interest, the area was fully re-planted with native forbs, grasses, shrubs and trees.
Cherry Creek before renovation Cherry Creek after renovation, in progress!
Before the renovation, the vegetated area was heavily eroded and the bike path ran adjacent to South Cherry Creek Drive with no other trails or access points. Now, the waterway is re-landscaped to a more original natural state in addition to a better designed bike trail and recreational access. The grasses and forbs were all planted as seeds. In its first year, the area is still relatively bare, however, the re-vegetation is a work in progress. You'll discover some of the natives blooming!
Come see how professional landscapers and horticulturalists create a natural meadow and riparian habitat. Hear about the problems they encounter and proposed resolutions. The tour will be presented by a civil engineer, landscape architect, plant ecologist and planner from Denver Parks and Recreation.
This is all applicable to creating a wildflower/pollinator garden in your own yard! Watch this VIDEO for a great overview of the project.
