Description

Developing a more sophisticated understanding of violent extremism and terrorism with special attention to the Boko Haram movement in Nigeria and the violence suffered by Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (Church of the Brethren in Nigeria). Participants will explore the social, cultural, political and religious processes that result in radicalization and violent extremism committee (wrongly) in the name of Islam and consider how best to confront those processes from an inter-religious perspective. 

Brigadier-General SK Usman (rtd) will join us via Zoom. He is actively involved with countering violent extremism in Nigeria, especially with Boko Haram.


Presenter:

Dr. Abdalla is professor emeritus at the United Nations- mandated University for Peace in Costa Rica.  He began his career as a prosecutor in Egypt’s National Security Office where he was a member of the public prosecutor team investigating the assassination of Egyptian President, Anwar Sadat, and numerous other terrorism cases.  His interest in not only the legal and security perspective but also the cultural, historical and religious roots of radical violence led him to George Mason University where he earned a Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution, and embarked on a three-decade career of teaching, training and research in the field of peace and conflict resolution worldwide.
