Due to increased pedestrian movement and utilization of bicycles, the crash investigation process for the pedestrian/bicycle crash is constantly evolving. The pedestrian/bicycle crash investigation is one of the most challenging investigations for the crash investigator due to limited evidence and evolving methodologies. New techniques and formulas to calculate the pedestrian/bicycle/vehicle speed are crucial to the investigation. A thorough review of the Six Stages of the Pedestrian Crash will be reviewed and discussed at length, along with projects.

This course will pick up where the Basic Pedestrian/Bicycle Crash Investigation Course ended. A thorough time/distance analysis is crucial in the investigation. The new and advanced methodologies and techniques presented in this course will provide the investigator with the skill and knowledge to answer questions and perform a thorough investigation. Some new topics to be discussed are determining the location of a vehicle when the occupant fell and struck the ground and calculating the bicycle speed utilizing the gear ratio, tire size, and pedal cadence. Obstacles related to the nighttime investigation and understanding of the “Glare Effect” and how vital this information is for the investigation.
