ISB Center Stage: Mike Richmond's Modern Walking Bass Technique

We are delighted to have jazz bassist & educator Mike Richmond join us with bass in hand to share wisdom from his classic method book, Modern Walking Bass Technique. It's everything you've always wanted to ask about constructing jazz bass lines or improving your walking technique - be ready with your questions!

Initially a guitar player, Mike Richmond was inspired by a Bill Haley & the Comets show that he attended with his parents in the mid-1950s. He switched to the bass before joining his junior high orchestra.

Mike has won Grammy Awards for recordings with Miles Davis and The Philadelphia Orchestra. He has been a featured soloist with the Bratislava Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cologne Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cologne Radio Big Band, and the Hamburg State Opera. Mike represented the United States as a guest lecturer at the International Symposium On Jazz Pedagogy sponsored by the French Cultural Ministry. He participated in the Miles Davis & Quincy Jones collaborative concert in Montreux, Switzerland, which was Davis's final performance. Mike subsequently replaced Charles Mingus in the Mingus Dynasty.

In addition to accompanying a who's who of stellar jazz musicians, Mike has had a deep appreciation of the international music scene from an early age. He performed in concert with sitar legend Ravi Shankar and the South Indian Orchestra, and served as chief bass instructor for the National German Jazz Orchestra.

Mike received a Teacher of the Year award in 1994 from New York University. His method book Modern Walking Bass Technique (Ped Xing Music) is used in over 300 universities and school systems internationally.

This will be a free event for all - don't miss it!
