August 6

Where to Meet:

Let's meet at the campground check in area and look for the RRTU signs at 10:15 am on 8/6/22. Shuttle departure is at 11:00 am, they will take us to the put-in 5 miles up river and we will float back to the campground.

Canoe & Kayaks:

  • Canoes are $60 for the day and they include 2 paddles, PDF and your shuttle. This option is ideal for two people.

  • Kayaks are $40 for the day and include paddle, PFD, and your shuttle.Their kayaks are sit in style, single person kayaks. They also have tandem style sit on top options too.

The New River:

The New River is recognized as the 2nd oldest river in America flowing 320 miles through NC,VA and WV. The section that we will be floating has one class II rapid at the start that can be avoided and then smooth sailing from that point forward! This section is not dammed and water levels fluctuate due to rainfall. The stream gauge for this float can be found at:

https://snoflo.org/report/flow/north-carolina/south-fork-new-river-near-jefferson/

Please note, the duration of this float will depend on the water level and how much you stop to fish (3 - 6 hours).Your NC fishing license is valid for this float and you do not need to purchase a VA license.

Lunch:

RRTU will provide lunch on the water to all participants. We will be serving smoked chicken salad with pasta salad as a side. We will find a location along the river to set up camp, enjoy lunch and share our river stories!

What to bring:

  • 6-7 wt with a floating line is ideal. Poppers & streamers work great too!

  • River shoes

  • Dry bag for your boat and a rain jacket as thunderstorms are common this time of year.

  • Sun protection - hat, buff, long sleeve and sunscreen.

  • Personal first aid kit.

  • Extra clothes to change into on the boat and at the take out.

Lodging:

The campground is booked for this weekend but there are several rentals in the area.
