Developing Cross-cultural Knowledge and Understanding

This introductory Cross-cultural workshop will focus on:
- Developing and broadening an understanding of 'culture' and 'cultural differences' in society and across cultural contexts, recognising the complexities of cross-cultural environments
- Interacting with colleagues in regard to the common pitfalls and cultural challenges when engaging with and supporting international students and partners.
- The opportunity for participants to develop Cross-Cultural short and long term goals
The workshop will be of interest and benefit to all staff that deal directly or indirectly with multicultural and international students, colleagues, partners and institutions.
SPEAKERS:
Veronica Lawrance, Unit Coordinator, School of Marketing, Curtin University
Veronica is an undergraduate and post-graduate of Curtin University. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Public Relations), and has a Master of Philosophy (Public Relations) action research degree. Her Masters research focused on Culture, change and professionalisation: A case-based study of volunteer motivation in the WA non-profit sector. She is currently half way through a Phd – Examining diversity on WA not-for-profit Boards.
Veronica has extensive experience in PR/Communications in the non-profit, private, corporate and government sectors. She has previously been a sessional academic at Curtin in the School of Management and the School of Marketing. Veronica is currently full time Acting Unit Coordinator for PR Planning and Evaluation and Cross-Cultural Communication. Other units she has taught are PR Techniques; PR Internship and PRTransmedia Storytelling.
Veronica is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD); the Public Relations Institute of Australia WA (PRIA, WA); the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR, UK); International Association for Public Participation (IAP2); the International Public Relations Association (IPRA).
Dr Linda Yang, Adjunct Senior Lecturer, Murdoch Business School, Associate Partner, Hofstede Insights
Dr Linda Yang is the Associate Partner at Hofstede Insights, an intercultural consultancy giant globally. She is also an Adjunct Senior Lecturer, Murdoch Business School, Murdoch University. Before moving to Australia, Linda was the Programme Leader for the Intercultural Development Programme (ICD) from 2018 to 2022 at UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, University College Dublin, Ireland. The ICD programme won the AMBA & BGA Excellence Silver Award in 2022.
Linda has a PhD degree in Intercultural Studies from Durham University in the UK. She has over 24 years’ experience working in China, U.K., Ireland and Australia. She has extensive experience in delivering intercultural consultancy and training to diverse participants from more than 86 nationalities from business sectors, NGOs and higher education sector. Her current research interests include intercultural education, intercultural communication, intercultural competence, divers teams and cultural differences in teaching and learning.
Dr Kevin McKenna, Vice-President, CISWA
Kevin has had extensive experience in the international education sector with over 30 years at Curtin University. He had various roles in Curtin Business School until in June 2000 he was appointed as the founding Pro Vice-Chancellor at Curtin University of Technology’s Malaysian Campus in Miri, Sarawak.
From 2004 to 2009 he had overall responsibility for all of Curtin’s international operations, as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, International. In 2008 he was responsible for the establishment of Curtin’s Singapore campus. He is now retired, served and President of CISWA for many years and currently serves as Vice-President of CISWA.
