A Beyond the Headlines Event

Girls’ Education is key to tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Investing in girls’ education benefits and transforms the entire global community. Girls who receive an education are more likely to delay marriage and early childbearing, have smaller families, and contribute to resilient societies. Yet 129 million girls are out of school and more are expected to not return as school systems restart and regroup after Covid-19. Persistent gender bias, poverty, violence, harmful social and cultural norms continue to create barriers to educating girls.

Dr. Veena Khandke is a Developmental Psychologist, teacher and educator who brings a unique combination of her expertise in global poverty, global health, gender studies, human rights, and sustainability to inspire and engage, analyze, strategize and drive change. In her role as Director of Grants and Partnerships at Together Women Rise, Dr. Khandke manages the grant cycles, advises, mentors, and liaises with applicants and partners from across the world.

At Furman University, Dr. Khandke is an adjunct faculty in Asian Studies and Faculty Affiliate with Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies and the Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities. Her teaching and research explore the relationships and intersections between poverty, gender, marginalized communities, and climate change.

Dr. Khandke was born in Hong Kong and grew up in India. She has B.A. and M.A. in Psychology from the University of Mumbai, India and a Doctorate in Human Development from the University of California, Davis. She enjoys traveling and is an unabashed foodie.

More on the Beyond the Headlines Series

Beyond the Headlines, a World Affairs Council Upstate event, is a Lunch and Learn speaker series designed to present fact-based information on the most pressing global issues of today. Utilizing academics and research institution leaders, we strive to keep political opinions out of the presentation and allow people to ask their own questions and formulate their own opinions. WAC Upstate programming is provided by Upstate International, a 501(c)3 founded in 1998 that has been empowering people and businesses of all nations to thrive in the Upstate by connecting them through programs, events, and initiatives that foster the dynamic exchange of international cultures and ideas for 25 years.
