Global food security is a complex challenge requiring contributions and solutions from a continuum of disciplines including agricultural, life, engineering, data, and social sciences. Underpinning food security are issues of availability, affordability, quality and safety, and natural resources and resilience. Each case is different across the globe. In this presentation, Mr Kresovich will present background on the challenges and ranges of food vulnerability and security, and the ongoing efforts to support national agricultural research programs around the world to address this continuing need for now and into the 21st century.
Steven Kresovich is an internationally recognized researcher and administrative leader with a focus on using genomic sand plant genetics to solve problems in agriculture, the environment, and human health. Along with serving as a program director for the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for crop improvement, he is a professor at Cornell University's School of Integrative Plant Science and is the Robert and Lois Coker Trustees Chair of Genetics in the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences at Clemson University.
Dr. Kresovich's research focuses on conservation genetics and improvement of crop plants including sorghum, maize, and sugar cane. Between research collaborations in Brazil, Mali, Kenya, Niger, and India, he has extensive experience in leadership roles in international research and development as an advisor to the Tata-Cornelll Agriculture-Nutrition initiative in India and as a representative for the US Agency for International Development as Scientific Liasion Officer for the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute and for system-wide Genetic Resources Conservation for the International Agricultural Research Centers.
