Motivating D/HH Readers Who are Reluctant, Developing, and/or Striving at all Ages and Levels: Igniting the Path to Lifelong Reading with a Book Flood

The more students read, the better they get at reading, but what do you do when students hate to read? How can educators encourage all students, even students who are significantly behind in reading, to fall in love with reading? What effective techniques and resources exist for students who are above, below, and significantly below reading level to create a love for reading?

Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing face unique challenges with reading. Language deprivation, gaps in background knowledge, and a lack of exposure to reading can result in delayed reading skills and potentially negative attitudes about reading. Explore what can be done to turn around a negative view of reading and how to make all students, even students just beginning to develop literacy skills, become avid and lifelong readers. Delve into reading with us and learn about effective techniques and resources for: vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, choice, access, volume (amount), conferring, ASL or spoken English read alouds, free book choices, book clubs in and out of class, book review videos, book talks, readarounds, book passes, summer reading, the gradual release of responsibility, and ScSR instead of DEAR or SSR!
