Parent/Guardian Program

February 16, 2023 | 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM (EST)

As most states are embracing the science of reading to improve literacy outcomes, several experts are emerging to help pave the way to ensure struggling readers achieve success. Dr. Timothy Odegard, the brilliant mind behind the Ohio Department of Education Dyslexia Course for teachers will be on the Springer campus for a presentation to parents/guardians/familes where he will discuss topics that range from gaining a deeper knowledge of dyslexia to understanding what the new Ohio Dyslexia Law means for your child and their school.

Program Topics & Outline

  • The evolution of dyslexia and its definition
  • The national and state landscape of policy around screening for dyslexia
  • The foundational skills of reading
  •  Screening to identify risk factors
  • Screening to identify primary characteristics of dyslexia
  • How to talk to your child's school/teacher(s)

About Tim Odegard

Dr. Odegard is a professor of psychology and holds the Katherine Davis Murfree Chair of Excellence in Dyslexic Studies at Middle Tennessee State University, leading the efforts of the Tennessee Center for the Study and Treatment of Dyslexia, which is one of MTSU's research centers and actively conducts research and supports the translation of research to practice.

As a developmental cognitive psychologist, his research focuses on memory and language and his research in reading is focused in three areas: identification of children who struggle with reading, intervention for students who struggle to read, and teacher training.
