In partnership with the University of Arizona's Office of Economic Education, ACEE is proud to host Dr. Jamie Wagner, Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and Mr. Matt Pierson, teacher at Bryan High School in Omaha, NE to introduce Arizona teachers to the new curriculum titled "Ethics, Economics, and Social Issues."
Today's students are interested in justice and equitable treatment. But what does that mean and how can we talk about it in the classroom? Economists operate within an ethical framework when they evaluate outcomes, public issues, or make decisions. The workshop will demonstrate to all participants a selection of lessons from a new curriculum designed to help instructors address difficult topics at the intersection of ethics and economics.
The curriculum contains 15 independent lessons at no cost and is available via the internet (links will be given to all participants). Lesson topics include: What is economic justice? What do we do about the homeless? Do businesses have a social responsibility? Should private companies operate prisons? and SO MUCH MORE.
The presenters will discuss the entire curriculum project and demo select lessons that you can immediately take back to your classroom. Each lesson is active, thought-provoking, and requires students to think about how ethics is a valuable and necessary tool to think like an economist.

Dr. Jamie Wagner
Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Economic Education,University of Nebraska at Omaha
Dr. Jamie Wagner is an Associate Professor of Economics and Director of the Center for Economic Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. As a faculty member she teaches undergraduate economics courses using the economic way of thinking to make the classroom content applicable to students. She also directs the Center for Economic Education working with pre-service and K-12 teachers in the Omaha area to assist economic and personal finance instruction through professional development workshops, curriculum development, and one-on-one work with teachers. Jamie’s research interests include economic education, economic pedagogy, financial literacy, and assessment techniques. Her research has been published in the Journal for Economic Education, the Journal of Consumer Affairs, Journal of Economics Teaching among other journals. Dr. Wagner also writes curriculum for k-12 teachers and was nationally recognized with a curriculum award from the National Association of Economic Educators for her Entrepreneurship curriculum for middle and high school students entitled, “Entrepreneurship in your Community: Creating your own Career”. She is a dynamic speaker who demonstrates economic and financial literacy concepts through interactive activities including simulations, discussions, and games.
Mr. Pierson has been teaching Economics for 10 years. He teaches on-level and honors economics with the honors class being dual enrolled. He has been on the textbook adoption team for his district for economics twice and was on the team who developed the course for economics for the district. Since then he has developed district assessments and other curriculum for Omaha Public Schools. Mr. Pierson also worked with the district program Making Invisible Histories Visible (MIHV) where students learn about often-forgotten local history and neighborhoods. In this program, he created an economics curriculum to accompany the program and students worked to create their own business plans to try and revitalize areas of Omaha impacted by redlining. In the classroom, Mr. Pierson uses unique and clever approaches to get students excited about economics. He specializes in using popular media and games and simulations to bring the economic way of thinking to life in the classroom. Mr. Pierson was on the writing team that created the curriculum “Entrepreneurship in your Community: Creating your own Career” which won an NAEE Silver Award. He is also on the writing team that has created the Ethics, Economics, and Social Issues curriculum that will be released by CEE in 2023. He is the social media director for the National Association of Economic Educators. In 2023 he will graduate with his Master’s of Arts in Economics and Entrepreneurship for Educators from the University of Delaware.
