Given the established relationship between trauma exposure and substance use/misuse, as well as the high rates of adverse childhood experiences among the general population, it is concerning but not surprising that nearly half of all teens (46.6%) report having tried illicit substances by 12th grade. Trauma not only has an impact on the developing brain, but also places individuals at greater risk of developing specific addictive disorders.
