The Science of Addiction in the Adolescent Brain

Stephen Dewey, Ph.D.

Given the established relationship between trauma exposure and substance use/misuse, as well as the high rates of adverse childhood experiences among the general population, it is concerning but not surprising that nearly half of all teens (46.6%) report having tried illicit substances by 12th grade.  Trauma not only has an impact on the developing brain, but also places individuals at greater risk of developing specific addictive disorders.  Dr. Stephen Dewey, Director of Research Education at Seafield Center, will offer a thoroughly captivating and comprehensive analysis of the disease of addiction.  Addiction is a disease where regionally-specific neurochemical changes underlying both its development and progression.  This presentation will identify the neurochemical changes associated with addition as well as the interaction beaten substance addiction and trauma.  Come see this engaging two-hour talk with Dr. Dewey on trauma and addiction!
