The River Mile Mission Statement
To foster investigation and understanding of our watersheds and to promote watershed health
The River Mile is…
…a network of educators, students, resource managers, scientists and environmental educators in the Columbia River watershed and beyond sharing what they know and learn about best practices, lessons learned, examples of participation, links to resources and collecting and sharing real world scientific data. It is a participant-driven approach to learning, researching and exploring the watershed health of the Columbia River and beyon.
Students and teachers are engaged in the practices of scientists and resource managers as they become intimately familiar with their outdoor classroom by spending time in the field inventorying, monitoring, analyzing, investigating and researching site discoveries.

Free Hands-On Resources, Curriculum

Learn to engage grade 2-12 students in fascinating crayfish studies in this hands-on STEAM workshop. Rick Reynolds, M.S.Ed., veteran educator and author of "Investigating Crayfish + Freshwater Ecosystems," will team up with Sara Pelleteri of the High Desert Museum and other partners from The River Mile network to step you through student activities including scientific investigations in your local watershed. Gain confidence to participate with The River Mile's Crayfish Study to support important research by scientists and wildlife managers.
Training will include:
- Intro. to crayfish + freshwater ecosystems with hands-on materials
- Overview of lesson plans aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards + Common Core State Standards
- Hands-on activities, including some outside based on location
- Learn how to participate in the citizen science project and collect and submit data
- NEW ArcGIS Online elements to use with students for data analysis and map creation
- Water quality and groundwater investigations
- Q & A
- Evaluation
Learn how different tools can be used to monitor native and invasive crayfish, assess water quality, and collect, analyze, and share data and student observations to benefit people and wildlife. Meet NGSS and CCSS while integrating the arts and all content areas.

Note:
Implementation stipends of $100 will be awarded to participants who complete all portions of the training:
- The complete live in-person or virtual training, which will include time to work on a project implementation plan.
- 1.5 hours of homework, which includes on-demand online training. It must be completed within 7 days of the training.
- The number of stipends may need to be capped; those who complete homework first will be the first to receive stipends.
Completion of this training and the on-demand online training qualifies you to lead groups in the collection and submission of crayfish data for The River Mile Network Crayfish Study.
Professional Development
Oregon and Other State Teachers
Certificates of Completion will be awarded to all participants for the training as well as the virtual on-demand training.
Washington Teachers
7.5 Free STEM clock hours will be awarded to everyone who completes all portions of the training:
- The complete live in-person or virtual training
- 1.5 hours of homework, which includes on-demand online training
Idaho Teachers
Option for 1 professional development credit from Univ. of Idaho: Course Title: Crayfish Investigations TRM. Participants must complete additional homework. Fee is the current University of Idaho credit rate. Other states may accept this credit as well. Please check with your state first.

Join the Study and Contribute Valuable Data!
Ever wondered if there are crayfish in a lake or stream? Have you seen crayfish near you? Help scientists by locating and identifying crayfish, then sharing your data through The River Mile's Crayfish Study!
The River Mile Network has teamed up with the University of Illinois and the University of Washington scientists! Data from this project will help inform researchers about the species distribution throughout the Columbia River Watershed and beyond.
After this training you have the ability to join the study and state research permit. Without the research permit, data may be collected May 1 to October 31 in Washington with a valid state fishing license and in waters open to crayfish fishing.
Anything you can do to help researchers will be of benefit!
