Pre-Lenten Day 2023

A day for Clergy and Lay Leaders to quietly prepare for the Season of Lent

Lenten Journey, Lenten Song with the Rev. Dr Lissa Wray Beal

The yearly Lenten journey is familiar. It is also always fresh, for we engage it from ever-changing lives and ministry contexts. In the rich resources of the lectionary we find companions for the path. Our pre-Lenten retreat traces journeys and psalms in the Old Testament texts during the Sundays of Lent. Stilling ourselves before the power of story and song, we will seek refreshing and equipping for our personal and ministerial Lenten roads.

Shrove Tuesday, February 21 – St James Cathedral (hybrid:  in-person or online)

This year's PreLenten Day will be a "hybrid" event:  clergy are welcome to attend the Cathedral in-person or to watch online.  Those who would like to come in-person for the Eucharist, addresses, and a time of quiet should note that only coffee and tea will be served in the Community Room (lower hall); no lunch is being provided.  Attendees may bring a bag lunch to eat in the Community Room or may leave to buy a lunch nearby during the 75 minute lunch break.   The Eucharist and addresses will be live-streamed for those who prefer to participate from home

Our Speaker:

The Rev. Dr. Lissa M. Wray Beal

The Rev. Dr. Lissa M. Wray Beal is from Vancouver, Canada. For the past 18 years she lived in Winnipeg and served as the Professor of Old Testament at Providence Theological Seminary. She recently moved to Toronto to serve as Professor of Old Testament at Wycliffe College at the Toronto School of Theology. She earned her PhD from the University of St. Michael’s College, and is ordained a priest in the Anglican Church of Canada.

In her teaching, she reveals the Old Testament’s enduring witness to God, and its necessary role in New Testament faith. Her published work includes commentaries on Kings and Joshua, and articles on Kings, Joshua, Psalms, and Jeremiah.  She is currently preparing a commentary on Jeremiah.

She and her husband Steve enjoy travelling, and often feel like pilgrims as they visit cathedrals and trace the lives of the saints.
