A collaborative symposium between the Illinois Council on Problem Gambling and Center for Compulsive Behavior and Addiction, Rush University Medical Center about Gambling Disorder, Mental, and Physical Health Considerations for Practitioners featuring several professional speakers.

Learning objectives

  • To evaluate science-based advancements on the neuroscience, diagnosis and treatment of gambling disorders.
  • To provide diagnosis of, and treatment for, gambling disorder co-morbidities.
  • To effectively communicate to patients important gambling related topics, including brain changes, stigma, and prevention and treatment strategies.

Iris Balodis, PhD McMaster University

Dr. Iris M. Balodis, PhD, is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at McMaster University and Associate Director of the Peter Boris Centre for Addictions Research. Her research focuses on motivational processes influencing maladaptive decision-making, including gambling disorder. Iris is a founding member of OGRS (The Ontario Gambling Research Society). She is affiliated with the Centre for Medicinal Cannabis Research and a core instructor on the Science of Cannabis courses.

Timothy W. Fong, MD UCLA

Tim Fong is a Professor of Addiction Psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA. He is the Director of the UCLA Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship, a one-year program that provides clinical training in the management of addictive disorders. Dr. Fong is also the co-director of the UCLA Gambling Studies Program; the purpose of the program is to examine the underlying causes and clinical characteristics of gambling disorder to develop effective, evidence-based treatment strategies. Dr. Fong is the Director of the Steering Committee to the UCLA Cannabis Research Initiative, a multi-disciplinary effort to examine the impact of cannabis on body, mind, and brain.

Kirk Moberg, MD, PhD University of Illinois College of Medicine

Dr. Kirk Moberg is a Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and has over 25 years of experience providing addiction treatment services. He has served as the medical director of three treatment centers in central Illinois: the New Choice Center for Addiction Recovery in Champaign, the Carle Addiction Recovery Center in Urbana, and the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery in Peoria. Dr. Moberg is a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine—Addiction Medicine and is certified as a Medical Review Officer.

T. Celeste Napier, PhD Rush University Medical College

Dr. Napier’s academic background includes a PhD in Pharmacology from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, and post-doctoral training in Neurobiology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. She has conducted research sabbaticals at Yale University School of Medicine and the University of Washington Health Sciences Center. Her scientific interests include the neurobiology of motivational behaviors, including those that regulate healthy decision-making versus those associated with drug and behavioral addictions. She has authored 140+ publications in peer reviewed scientific journals, and 180+ published abstracts on neuroscience topics that span biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology and behavior, as well as addiction education for health professionals.

Marc Potenza, MD, PhD Yale University School of Medicine

Dr. Potenza is a board-certified psychiatrist with sub-specialty training and certification in addiction psychiatry. He is a Senior Scientist at Yale University School of Medicine’s National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse and the Director of the Problem Gambling Clinic, the Center of Excellence in Gambling Research, and the Women and Addictive Disorders Core of Women’s Health Research. He has consulted to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, National Registry of Effective Programs, National Institutes of Health, American Psychiatric Association and World Health Organization on matters of addiction. Deirdre Querney, MSW City of Hamilton Alcohol, Drug & Gambling Services

Deirdre Querney, BSW, MSW

Deirdre Querney is a Registered Social Worker who has provided outpatient addiction treatment services for the past 23 years at the City of Hamilton’s Alcohol, Drug & Gambling Services. Her clinical experience includes individual counselling, group work and couples/family counselling. Deirdre is certified by the Canadian Problem Gambling Certification Board (CPGCB) and the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation
