This two-day training will provide participants with a deep dive into the experiences of domestic violence survivors who use substances, and trauma-informed strategies to support them. 

Day 1- Challenging Bias and Stigma with Motivational Interviewing and Trauma Informed Care 

In this training, participants will examine the types of stigmas experienced by people who use substances, the ways in which stigma can create barriers on the road to recovery, and how stigma can increase the risk factors such as continued use, overdose, and suicide.  Participants will learn how Motivational Interviewing techniques can create an open dialogue, enhance trauma-informed services, and reduce the bias and stigma often experienced by people who use substances in other systems.   

Day 2- Substance Use and Parenting 

In this training, participants will explore the unique parenting challenges faced by people who use substances, the associated stigma from family, friends and healthcare systems and the stressors of parenting in recovery.  Participants will learn helpful strategies for supporting substance-using people during pregnancy, how to assist with preparing for the stressors of parenting and their effect on recovery, and how to create a trauma-informed environment around these difficult issues.
