In the Thick of It - Ukraine

Join the Overseas Press Club on Feb. 22 as we talk with Ukrainian journalists live from the front lines on the anniversary of Russia’s invasion.

Three journalists working in different parts of Ukraine will describe how they continue to work and survive under increasingly dire conditions. Each of the three received a grant from the OPC in late 2022 to help them continue to do their essential journalistic work.

Alla Koren is editor of the local newspaper "Time. People. Events" in the town of Sarata in the Odesa region. She has worked at the paper for almost 40 years.

Alina Kravchenko was working for Donbas Online, a regional TV and radio company in the Lukhansk region of eastern Ukraine when the war started. After her neighborhood suffered massive shelling, she evacuated to Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine, and now works remotely for the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine on the project “Journalists are Important,” which tells the stories of Ukrainian journalists who suffered because of the war.

Glib Golovchenko is chairman of the Mykolaiv Press Club, and president of the All-Ukrainian Association of Press Clubs. He is working to provide humanitarian aid to journalists and others in Mykolaiv, and producing a video series called "War Heroes of the Mykolaiv Region."

The moderator is David A. Andelman, a past president of the OPC, a columnist for CNN Opinion and author.

Maryna Prykhodko will provide live translation as needed. She is a Ukrainian activist and volunteer based in New York and currently on the Executive/Leadership team of the non-profit organization Razom for Ukraine.

Registrants will receive a link to join via Zoom about an hour before the program on Feb. 22. Please register early so we can be sure to email you the link before the program begins.
