Modern Quilting Workshop

This beginner quilting class will make the “Hey There” wall hanging (baby size) quilt from Wendy Chow’s book, Urban Quilting.

This workshop will be taught in four 3-hour sessions. Each class may require homework based on what is accomplished during the classes.

Session 1 (March 18th): cut fabrics, produce strip set units and half-square triangle rows

Session 2 (March 25th): block assembly, border assembly and quilt assembly

Session 3 (April 1st): assemble quilt sandwich, quilt, sew and add binding, hand finish

Session 4 (April 8th): any necessary catch-up and finishing

Materials & supplies are additional and must be purchased at least one day before class, preferably sooner so students can complete all homework prior to first session. Materials needed include:

Urban Quilting by Wendy Chow

fabric A - 5/8 yd (quilting cotton recommended for all fabrics, more solids are available in store)

fabric B - 7/8 yd

fabric C - 1/2 yd

fabric D - 1/2 yd

backing fabric - 2 7/8 yd

binding fabric - 3/8 yd

batting - 1 1/2 yd

4" wide quilting ruler

2 spools coordinating thread

rotary cutter

cutting mat

* Please note you will need a 1/4" presser foot, which is specific to your sewing machine. If you don't have one, we can show you how to achieve the 1/4" seams you'll need.

Also needed:

iron to press fabric at home in advance

straight and large safety pins, fabric scissors

HOMEWORK:

• purchase and pre-wash all fabrics (do not wash the batting)

• press fabrics and trim selvedges

• oil/clean sewing machine and attach 1/4" pressure foot (if using your own)

• wind two bobbins with thread

Previous experience with a sewing machine is required. If you've never sewn on a machine before, we recommend our beginner class or a beginner sewing lesson. In this workshop, you will receive direct instruction and work at your own pace. You may bring your own machine or use one of ours. We will meet for 3 hours over four sessions. If you need additional time or help with the project, you may add on private sessions as needed.

We are happy to assist you with all supplies in person or via phone at 773.486.8996.
