Motivational Interviewing for
Vaccination Promotion

Description

Motivational Interviewing is a client-centered counseling approach designed to help people find the motivation to make a positive behavior change. The South Carolina Immunization Coalition invites you to join leading researchers from University of South Carolina and Duke University to learn and practice core skills of motivational interviewing.

This educational activity is free of charge and offers Continuing Education credits (CEU) for medical, nursing, and pharmacy professionals. 

Lunch will also be provided! 

Workshop sizes are limited to 20 participants and a virtual option is available. 

Course Objectives

  • Describe basic principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI)
  • Demonstrate core skills of MI, including open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summarizing (OARS skills)
  • Identify best practices in implementing MI to promote uptake of recommended immunizations 
  • Define 'stages of change' and explain MI-based strategies appropriate for each stage
  • Discriminate between change talk and sustain talk
